4th panel, Krel’s pinky is green.
Actually, this strip makes plenty of sense. For example, Humans would look at animals of the same species suddenly eating each other and think almost nothing of it other than basic survival instinct, but when it happens with Humans it is automatically immoral and evil.
I doubt it, someone already shot up a daycare, and that STILL wasnt bad enough, how much worse could it possibly get?
Pretty much this.
This is the equivalent of saying “At least it’s not raining!” Thanks a lot, man. You’ve doomed us all.
I think we’ve all been pretty much doomed from the start. As a species we’re too obsessed with killing each other for it to start truly bothering us now. The individuals who despair over this sort of thing are so far in the minority that it’s almost funny. That is, if I were into jokes that result in wanting to commit suicide, or find some way of resigning from the human race.
Well, the issue is that throughout history, people tended to define those not of their tribe as sub-human so that they could justify killing and enslaving them. Current social norms say that all post-birth humans are part of our tribe, and therefore unkillable unless they act the aggressor. However, this is more of a polite fiction than actual belief—for instance, most Americans don’t get too worked up about some kid killed in Afghanistan… they’re NOT really ‘US’ on the same level. And most suburbanites don’t really act as if the kids getting shot in Chicago are ‘us’.
Hence the ‘stop the madness!” in the media and political class when someone who looks like them gets killed. And the ‘eh, would have happened anyway, they had it coming’ when the other gets killed.
If only we had some sort of belief system we could turn to that actually forced people to claim all humanity as ‘family’ instead of other! Hmmm… someone should try to set something like that up.
More seriously, the problem with people like the Connecticut shooter is that thewir minds live in a very bad place where EVERYONE is other and therefore killable…
And yes, I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about why some living things may be killed and eaten while others may NOT be killed and eaten…. boundaries are very interesting, especially since different cultures put them in different places.
For instance, pygmies. To you and I, they’re obviously just really short people. But in some African nations, they’re acceptable food….
The cultural “explanation” is just an excuse, and I don’t buy it. I’m convinced there is something more instinctual and basic going on, in some fundamental part of our genetic make-up. As societies and civilisations have replaced small nomadic tribes, we’ve tried to excise this aspect of ourselves by labelling it as “evil”, and making it seem a bad thing that goes against nature. Well it is a bad thing, but I doubt very much that it goes against nature.
As for the idea about a belief system that forces people to claim all humanity as family, I really hope you’re joking. The key word you used there is “forced”, and historically people tend not to like being forced. Religions are the source or the official source at least of more conflict in recent history than literally anything else. We are not designed for consensus, and trying to force it on people always ends in the opposite of what was supposedly intended.
I may not like human nature or behaviour very much, in fact I spend a lot of time hating myself and everyone else because of it, but I’m too much of a realist, and too honest, to try and deny it or find excuses for it.
Why would Krel want to rule the Hoo-mans anyway? Their music is so tepid.
So he can sing sweet, sweet lullabies to them.
(Which, incidentally, will crush their last remaining resistance.)
These mass shootings are fundamentally a misplaced decimal within human society. They are rarer than being struck by lightning or dying from drowning in your bath tub yet it is the only time people feel motivated.
The reality is until we solve our poverty issue and remove the fight for resources our greater potential for violence won’t be extinguished so excuse me if I don’t get my dander in a fluff over these tragedies but look at the utter lack of disregard for the deeper issues that penetrate us all.
Hmmm…the conclave begins and Tallman disappears…. perhaps he’s not a graphic novelist, but a Cardinal! Dolan, is that you?
Five worthless internet coins say he’s been procuring an angel costume and a plane ticket to Italy in order to arrange some “divine counsel”.
What kind of Reptilian ale is that that would make a serving tray change from brown to deathly white at their separation? Must be something amazing.
Tolatarian rule….like 1984.
Or Brave New World or Fahrenheit 451 or Player Piano or Brazil or….
To mangle a lyric from Weird Al’s “Amish Paradise”:
Party like it’s 1984!
I’ve churned butter once or twice.
If you know what I mean
William Tallman is a liar?! Nooooooo.
Uh, wow. This comic is amazing. Consider yourself followed, good sir.
